988 for Suicide Hotline

998 New Suicide Hotline

998 for Suicide Hotline

Beginning July 16th, a new number, 988 for suicide hotline prevention will be in use.

Each year, suicide kills more people than homicide. Suicide is now the 10th leading cause of death in the US. White males account for nearly 7 out of 10 suicides, although suicide rates are increasing among women and girls, as well as among racial and ethnic minorities.

Every 11 minutes, someone in the United States commits suicide.

There are many ways to help prevent suicide. Warning signs of suicide include talking about wanting to die or hurt oneself, expressing feelings of hopelessness, talking about being a burden to others, increasing alcohol or drug abuse, withdrawing from friends and activities, abnormal mood swings, and giving away prized possessions. If you think someone is in danger of harming themselves, don’t leave them alone. Remove any firearms, pills, or other objects that could be used in a suicide attempt. Get the person to a hospital emergency room or call 911.

Suicide Prevention Hotline

The new number, 988, will bring callers to the Suicide Prevention Hotline. It is a shortcut and easier to remember than the longer number. If you are feeling that bad, the last thing you need to do is scramble to find the right phone number to call. So 998 is easy to remember and quick to dial.
