Coping with Grief

Grief Angel

Grief has become part of everyday life for many people. Covid has brought grief to millions who have lost loved ones. In the news we have vivid images of the pain and suffering of people in Ukraine. More than ever before, children and young people are experiencing grief and loss. Let's talk about coping with grief.

How Grief Affects Us

When we suffer the loss of a loved one, our whole world is turned upside down. For a while, the sadness we feel affects everything we do. It can be overwhelming. Over time, we learn how to live with the loss and assimilate it into our lives. While in mourning, we may lose our appetite or overeat, sleep too much or too little, and avoid social gatherings. It is okay initially but eventually, we will find our way back to living again. If we do not, our health may suffer.

Coping with grief

Spending time with family and friends is important. Allowing yourself to grieve while slowly getting back to your normal activities may seem very hard. But time really does help health your heart and you learn how to live around the loss and heal. You will never forget the loved one and they are always with you in your heart. Engaging in the rituals of your culture and religion (if you have one) can help you cope with the pain of the loss. Time does help, as does the literature, music, and art of grief. Art helps because it reminds us that others have suffered too and we don't feel as alone.

How We Can Help

Grief is a painful but natural process. But sometimes, when you feel overwhelmed, it is helpful to talk with someone. Counseling and supportive psychotherapy can help you get through a difficult time of bereavement.

Art Therapy

Art therapy can help you express your grief and process the loss through a creative process. It can be a transformative experience. Guided by the Art Therapist, no artistic talent is necessary.
