Feeling Down? Here's 3 Ways to Feel Better

feel better

Now that Summer is here, most people seem upbeat and looking forward to the sun, the heat, and maybe a vacation by the sea. But are you one of those who is feeling down? Maybe you normally are excited at this time of year,  but now you find that you just are not feeling like you normally do. You are feeling down and may not even be sure why. It could be a case of summer blues, or maybe you are feeling down after graduating and are now facing the dreaded job search? We have seen college students who are stressed over not having a good internship this summer. High school students are excited and apprehensive about leaving home for college in August. Some have  already started worrying.

3 Ways to Feel Better

Regardless of why you are feeling down, these 3 things can help you find some relief:

  1. Music. Create a playlist of upbeat songs and listen to it every day. This may sound counter-intuitive but sometimes it helps to listen to sad music. So make a short playlist of a few sad songs. Listen to it once in a while. But once a day, listen to the upbeat playlist. Music has the power to help us feel better and not so alone.

  2. Get up and move around. You can take a walk, go to the gym, do some yoga, or what ever you feel you can do to move a little more. Movement can help you feel better, even just for just a little while. If you like doing yoga, you don't have to spend an hour doing it, just 5 minutes will help.

  3. Call a friend. If you find you are isolating, it is important that you spend some time with a friend or two. Isolation might feel good, but in the big picture, it becomes harmful. So contact a friend and spend some time together. Take a walk, watch a movie together, or just get a cup of coffee together.
