How to Stay Healthy This Summer

Stay Healthy This Summer

How to Stay Healthy

Summer is the time to relax and enjoy the sun. But it's also important to stay healthy during this time. Here are some tips on how to stay healthy or become healthy. You will feel better in Autumn if you maintain a baseline of healthy activities and diet this Summer.

Eat Seasonally

In Summer, there is a wider range of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables. Try to incorporate more of them into your daily diet. If you are at the beach, there are plenty of delicious and healthy options. But the occasional Boardwalk pizza or ice cream won't harm you. There are no food police and there is no perfect way to eat. Try to avoid eating recreationally (when you are not hungry) or emotionally (when you are upset). Food is not your friend or enemy. We don't want to get into deprivation and never eat junk food either. Instead you are looking to have balance. If you dine out often with friends, instead of having a full dessert all the time, maybe you can split one with everyone or just have a taste. Be flexible, try to have fresher, healthier meals, and you will feel good about your diet. Incorporating more seasonal fruits and vegetables will help you stay healthy this Summer.

Be Active

Sounds like a no brainer, but many people go to the beach, sit and sun themselves, and that's all they do. It can be one of life's great pleasures to sit on the beach and read, nap, and watch the waves roll in. But why not get up and walk along the shore? If you like going in the water, then be sure to. Splashing around in the ocean or in a pool is fun and good exercise. Take a walk in the morning before things heat up or in late afternoon when they start to cool down.

Be Social and Have Solitude

Summer is often a time for pool parties, get togethers, graduation parties, and travel. While it is essential to spend time with friends and family, it is also important to have some time for yourself. Over-planning and running from one activity to another can leave you feeling frazzled and exhausted. It is okay to say no sometimes. You want to enjoy your Summer, not make it into a marathon of commitments.

Spend Time Outdoors

Even if you hate hot weather, there are often cool, breezy days where the heat and humidity are not a big factor. Be sure to get outside on you deck, patio, porch, balcony, or whatever you have, even for a few minutes. Listen to the sounds of Nature and observe what is going on outside around you. Take a few breaths of fresh air and then go back inside. If you love Summer weather, be cautious about getting too much sun.  Use the appropriate sun blocks recommended by your physician. If you take psychotropic medications, check with the pharmacist if you have to limit time in the sun. Certain medications have warnings about sun and heat exposure. Don't Overdue the Partying

Summer often means tropical drinks, jello shots, drinking games, and more (not just Summer of course). It is essential that you drink plenty of water during the Summer. Try to be mindful of your alcohol consumption. Overdoing it with drinking, cannabis, or other substances and leave you feeling horrible the next day.  Balance is key.

Maintain Balance

If you start with adequate rest by getting enough sleep, then the occasional over-indulgence of food or alcohol won't be so bad. But if you strive for balance in what you eat and drink, your social activities, and having a healthy amount of physical activity, you will likely not put on extra weight this Summer. It is more likely that you will find yourself in September with happy memories and a healthy body and mind.
