Productivity: Ways of Reducing Procrastination and Regaining a Sense of Accomplishment

We’ve all been there: That moment when we’re staring at a blank document or screen, completely overwhelmed and not sure where to start. And then we put it off until later, only to find that later turns into never.  Sound familiar?

Procrastination has a way of creeping up on us and taking over our lives before we know it. Suddenly, we’re watching Netflix all day when we had planned to be working on that project, or we’re scrolling through social media for hours when we should be studying.

Procrastination

Many of us have struggled with procrastination at some point in our lives. It’s that nagging voice in our head that tells us we’re not good enough, that we can’t do it, or that we’re too tired. And once that voice starts talking, it’s hard to silence it.  There are many things in life that can cause us to procrastinate – from feeling overwhelmed by a task, to lack of interest or even fear of failure.

But whatever the reason, procrastination can be a major obstacle to productivity and goals.   It can be difficult to get work done when we continue to avoid it. This can potentially lead to feelings of guilt and dissatisfaction with yourself as well as feelings of hopelessness and frustration.

Procrastination is a habit that can have a significant impact on our lives, both professionally and personally. It can keep us from reaching our goals, lead to anxiety and stress, and generally lower our quality of life.   Fortunately, there are many ways to overcome procrastination and regain a sense of accomplishment. Here are some tips:

  1. Make a plan

When you have a plan, it’s easier to get started on your work. You know what you need to do and what your goal is. Having a plan also allows you to track your progress and make sure you’re on track.

  1. Set deadlines

If you have a specific date by which you need to finish your work, it’s less likely that you’ll procrastinate. When you know there’s a consequence for not completing your task, it will be easier to get it done.

  1. Chunking Tasks

One of the best ways to reduce procrastination is to break down your tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks. When you break down a large task into smaller steps, it becomes easier to see what needs to be done and how much progress you are making. This can help to reduce feelings of overwhelm and discouragement, and make it easier to stay focused on your work.

  1. Pomodoro Method

The Pomodoro Method can be an effective way of breaking down a large project into manageable chunks of productive time increments.  The method requires the use of a timer and an intentional commitment to remain focused on the task at hand for a specific amount of timed and uninterrupted intervals.  The method highlights the importance of taking breaks and engaging in a relaxing activity during that time so that your mind can consolidate and assimilate the new information.

  1. Caveday

Caveday is a virtual company that provides “facilitated work sessions in a community that keeps you focused and accountable.”  These sessions are monitored by a trained facilitator who will guide the virtual group through goal setting and focusing tasks.

If you are someone that is in an environment in which you are often alone or working on a task individually, it may be helpful to experience this virtual community of like-minded individuals who are coming together with the intention of focusing and getting work accomplished.  Here is the website to learn more: https://www.caveday.org/

  1. Prioritize 3 Tasks for Your Day

We have many tasks and demands that are pulling our attention.  It is important to begin each day by not only creating a list of tasks, but also prioritizing the 3 most important ones.  By doing this, we are making room to then problem solve and strategize the best ways to allot time to get those tasks completed.

  1. Setting Realistic Expectations

Recognize that some days getting up, making the bed, preparing meals and getting a full night’s rest are the most important markers of living a productive life.  We may have multiple demands and tasks to account for and complete.  Allow yourself to set realistic goals and expectations for accomplishing each of those goals in a given time frame.

Consider the steps that you might need to take to accomplish each goal and let that guide your expectations for when a goal might be reasonable to complete.
